In many parts of Africa and Asia, walking takes on a whole different meaning. That's because many women and children in these developing areas have to walk six kilometres every day to get water for their family. It's not a stroll in the park, or a breezy city walk -- it's a dangerous, hot, painful journey to provide for the needs of their families.
Our sense of what is realistic or not might actually limit our own possibility. Consider running a four-minute mile. It was thought to be impossible until Roger Bannister broke the four-minute barrier in 1954. The record now stands at 3:43 and the mile has been run in under four minutes at least 4,500 times.

Last year, I ran the Boston marathon with Team World Vision to raise money for clean water projects in developing countries. I'm planning on doing so again this year. Training for marathons requires discipline and motivation over a long period of time, much like what's required to form any new habit or routine.

No matter which running style you may espouse, you have something in common with each other when it comes to racing; that is you each need to be ready both physically and mentally for personal success at the finish line.
The regular three-hour-a-day training of their professional lives is on hold along with so much else as they wait to hear if Canada will accept them. "Life is day-to-day," says Dawit. "I have lost my country, my friends, my family." But he has found a new family at Matthew House and a new country in Canada and it already feels good.
