You Know You're a Canadian When..

Let's face it, if the world is ending in a few months, Canadians had best acknowledge that the year 2012 has given us a unique national identity before we (and the Earth's seven billion inhabitants) are unable to throw another curling rock over the hog line. Without waiting for the world to end or the NHL season to start, let's begin.

A Main Floor to Die For

Steven and his partner, Alan, longing for a backyard and some much needed elbow space, made the big move from a small city condo to a suburban bungalow. But the house needed much more work than they first thought. By opening up the space and filling it with contemporary fixtures and finishes, comfortable furniture and hip accessories, this house went from "suburban sad" to "urban pad" and is now ready for the stylish duo and their city-dwelling friends.

The Fate Of Baby M

It is the role of parent to provide, protect, and nurture our children to grow to be thriving young citizens within the community. How can a parent of a two-year-old allegedly harm a child to the point that they are placed on life support? If they are proven guilty it demonstrates a lack of reason and for this no abusive parent should decide the next chapter of their child's life.

My Facebook Profile May Be Boring, But I'm Still Taking it Down

Today I deactivated my Facebook account. The news that a potential privacy breach on the popular social media website saw old but private messages posted on users' timelines sent sheer panic through my colleagues' eyes. Everyone dropped what they were doing to make sure their lives -- and perhaps secrets -- were protected. I was one of them.

A View From The Bottom: NHL Lockout For The Working Man

With word of the NHL lockout reaching the public ear last week, a lot has been said. We hear from both sides. We hear from the commentators, the pundits, the "experts", and the fans who suffer the most from this needless squabble. But what do we hear from the people who work behind the rink? You see, I'm gainfully employed by the Calgary Flames - specifically, I wash dishes for the all the fine diners lucky (and rich) enough to enjoy the fine foods served up at the 'Dome.

A Tour Of The Deep Relationship Between B.C. Chinese Immigrants, First Nations

We visited forgotten places like an abandoned railway tunnel, a former gold mine where Chinese labourers once toiled, and an unmarked cemetery where Chinese pioneers were laid to rest. In the valley, I discovered how two histories intersected ― how some First Nations people nursed railway workers back to health when they were left to die along the tracks, how First Nations men had teamed up with Chinese labourers working in a Nanaimo coal mine to fight off white bullies, and how some labourers had children with First Nations women.

Killing In the Stream Of: What Do Webcasts Like The Killers' Werner Herzog-Helmed "Unstaged" Mean?

Mere hours after The Killers' new album Battle Born arrived on both literal and virtual store shelves, the Las Vegas synth-rock stalwarts themselves split the on- and offline difference by taking to the wondrously baroque stage of the Bronx's 1920s-era Paradise Theatre for a Werner Herzog-directed livestream concert.

North America has one of the highest obesity rates in the world. The reasons are multi-faceted. Fast food; super sizing; convenience; lack of exercise; work schedules; no time; family demands and stress. People from other countries have similar factors in their lives but manage to keep their body weights at a healthier level. So what are their secrets?

Turning a Fire-Damaged House Back into a Home

Rudi (one of my favourite contractors) and his wife Sue had lovingly completed the renovations on their home when disaster struck. While they were away one weekend, there was a fire in their home. It completely destroyed their basement, and the smoke damage in the rest of the house was so severe that nothing could be salvaged. Since Rudi works so hard on my show, I decided to get my crew together to give he and his wife a beautiful space to come home to.

My TIFF 2012 Diary

I've been attending the Toronto International Film Festival in various permutations over the last decade. This year was especially interesting as it was my inaugural TIFF season on Twitter -- adding a virtual blizzard of information into the mix. My coverage this year was a pu-pu platter of events, lounges, pop-ups and charitable causes and with most of it being re-tweeted in real-time, I quickly learned that I could not "dance at every wedding."

Behind the Headlines: What We're Not Saying About Chris Brown's Tattoo

Craig and Marc Kielburger

The headline that caught our attention: Did Chris Brown tattoo a battered Rihanna on his neck? When we look behind this headline, the real issue is that no one is talking about the real issue. It's not just about Chris Brown or Rihanna. It's about domestic abuse. It's also about celebrity-issued get-out-of-jail-free cards.

With the arrival of the crisp, fall weather, it's more important than ever to make sure you have the right nutrients to stay fit, healthy, and energized. Plant-based foods provide all of the macronutrients essential in maintaining optimal energy. Since working out causes physical stress, it's essential to neutralize the body by consuming a plant-based diet filled with fruits and vegetables. Here are some of my favourite superfoods.

Canada Needs More Leaders Like Peter Lougheed

Daniel D. Veniez

Peter Lougheed's grace, class, and dignity should be an example to current and future political leaders in Canada. His life and service to his country showed that great things could be accomplished for the common good with a mixture of intelligence, daring, principle, integrity, humility, and an understanding of the power of compromise. Canada owes much to the statesmanship of giants like Lougheed. He was a nation-builder. His passing is a reminder to me of how much we so desperately need people like Peter Lougheed in our public life today.

Peter Lougheed Dead At 84: Former Alberta Premier Was A Titan

Pablo Fernandez | Posted 11.13.2012 | Canada Alberta
Pablo Fernandez

The former Alberta premier and Tory leader was, unequivocally, a titan. He was an Edmonton Eskimos alumni, with a masters degree from Harvard, and with the kind of family and political pedigree the likes of which you don't see in the public arena any more. But never mind that. Lougheed was a politician who redefined a province, who empowered Western Canada, who laid the foundation and turned Alberta from a rural bread basket into the engine that today fuels one of the world's most stable economies.

iPhone 5 Canada: The Dysfunction Of Three-Year Contracts

The painful reality of Canadian cellphone service has once again come to the forefront this week. When Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook unveiled the updated pricing for the company's new lineup of iPhones on Wednesday, led by the iPhone 5, he pointed out that the suggested prices were on two-year contracts. That's the norm in most countries, but it's of course not the case in Canada.

Harmeen is a fantastic cook, and she was thrilled when her daughter Niki expressed an interest in the culinary arts and offered to take over some of the cooking duties. The problem was the family's outdated kitchen, which was cramped, awkward and completely inefficient in its use of space. While it was barely functional enough for one chef, it was positively crowded with two. My secret ingredient for this kitchen? Demolition!

Neck Tattoo or Not, We Should Be Boycotting Chris Brown

Anne T. Donahue

Chris Brown's recent neck tattoo sparked yet another media firestorm. But hundreds of pieces have already been written about Chris Brown, which only fuel him. Maybe now is the time that we finally put a mark in the Chris Brown "lose" column, but channel our own anger, frustration and feelings of helplessness into actually helping. And for the sake of human rights, we can stop buying his music.

With the dawn of a new autumn looming over our heads, we desperately grasp at straws trying to maintain those laidback summer vibes we've been feeling all season long. And how better to pay your respects that lounging in the late afternoon sun with a liquored up snow cone and a barbecue?

Québeckers Don't Want Separation, We Want Better

Noah Richler | Posted 11.07.2012 | Canada Politics
Noah Richler

If ever it really did look like Québec was coming close to separation, I'd move back in a flash. There'd be no way I'd let the province secede and me be without my home and the Péquistes without the thorn of me in their side. I'd also be there because I like what Québeckers are demanding. But separation isn't going to happen. Québeckers want a better society, a better representation of their views. We could do worse than look for an example to a territory that, using whatever tools circumstances have placed in its reach, demands the change that elections can bring.
