Clinton Vs. Trump Is A False Choice

We shrugged as the media pumped Donald Trump into our homes 24/7. We could have demanded the same coverage for Bernie Sanders, but instead we guffawed at the spectacle. We aided the media's manipulation through apathy, and now we are feigning surprise that it has come down to these two horribly flawed people. Like the war in Iraq, we just swallowed the content and acted like the coverage was simply a reflection of the reality. It wasn't. It was an invention from the start.

Have You Met A Trump Lately?

One morning, I noticed a man behind me acting rather strange. This bloke was a fairly standard looking late middle aged man, probably in his 50's or early 60's, regulation belly protruding from his unfashionable shirt and bland baseball hat from some town he had once visited now covering his humpty dumpty head. And he was, quite clearly, a Trump.

We Need To Talk With America Before It's Too Late

If you think of earth as a giant and complicated neighbourhood of neighbourhoods, it might be said that the Trumpification we are now witnessing in the States doesn't really have anything to do with Trump himself. He is not the cause. He is the opportunistic benefactor. Let's call him dystopia Donald. He's relatively new to this area. But he's still affecting our neighbours to the south, and we have a duty to at least have a chat with them.

Let's Celebrate Immigrants This Canada Day

Anti-immigrant xenophobia is usually tied to nationalism, and nationalism tends to spike during independence celebrations. So here's something to think about this Canada Day: everyone in this colonized land that is not First Nations or Inuit is an immigrant. I'm fourth generation myself. Three of my four grandparents were born here. My wife's relatives immigrated to North America from Denmark and Scotland. Every single other citizen that is not indigenous immigrated here, too, be it from Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, South America or wherever else.

The Unexamined Significance Of Donald Trump

While most reasonable people are mystified and disgusted by the popularity of Donald Trump, his appeal isn't surprising considering the way the Republican party has conducted itself for the past 50 years. But while Trump is adept at using the type of bigotry the Republican Party has employed for decades, he deviates from Republican orthodoxy in the areas most important to Republican elites. And that makes all the difference.
