For many Muslims, God is not a stingy merchant engaged in debit-credit accounting or a partisan bully that enforces hollow rituals by threats of eternal damnation. For them ritual prayer is not about seeking material gains from a stern taskmaster but having an undying trust in the power of hope, mercy and compassion.
In the present trying times, one extremist group after another rears its ugly head. This includes the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, Al-Shabaab, and the most recent incarnation ISIS. Yet, my colleagues at Universalist Muslims and I refuse to let go of Islam.
Recently, a parochial vicar in Edmonton added to the debate on an issue as trivial as the use of washroom facilities by a transgender student in an elementary Catholic school. We have to eschew jingoistic propaganda, rhetorical questions and the blame games to listen to the voices that call for radical empathy. We need to hear the families of the murdered youth Naftali Fraenkel and Abu Khdeir who reached out to each other.
It's time Canadians are made aware of the tactics of intimidation employed by the BDS movement so that they understand that many celebrities who cancel events in Israel are not doing so for political reasons but rather out of concern for their lives -- personally and professionally.
I've been reading about the war in Burma/Myanmar. It's a conflict between the Buddhist Burmese majority and approximately 800,000 Royhingya Muslims in the Arakan (Rakhine) State. They are among the world's least wanted and most persecuted people.
