So you've decided to search the Internet for an online coach. You're ready. You want to make a change and you realize you need help from a trusted expert. So what should you be looking for? How do you know if you're investing in the right person and product? And what research do you need to do before making your decision?

Here are a few things to add to your checklist when hiring an online trainer:

1) Quality education, experience and proven results

One of the major problems with the fitness industry is the complete lack of regulation. Because of this lack of regulation it is hard to know if you are placing your trust in the right hands. It is important to research your potential new coaches to make sure they have the education, qualifications, certifications and coaching experience (we recommend a minimum of 5 years full-time in the business).

It is important to ensure that your coaches 'walk the talk' and take care of their fitness but remember, just because someone looks fit doesn't mean they can coach you to reach your fitness goals. It is extremely important that your selected coaches have trained clients in person and not just online. Trust us, in order to become an expert coach, training clients in person is the first step! You should also have access to a trial period where you can experience the programming, the coaching support and have a chance to decide if it's the right 'fit' for you!

2) Accountability and community support

'What gets measured gets done' so the saying goes, and it is true! Your online coach should have a system in place so you can track your training frequency. Since online training negates having face-to-face time with coach, it is important to have 24/7 access to get the support you need! Features such as workout tracking system and access to online coaching and community forums are essential for success.

Support and a strong community of fellow members is a hugely underestimated necessity for long-term success. You should also be able to contact your coach with questions. So often when starting out you might have questions and having an expert available to support you is vital to your success.

3) Smart Programming (aka programming that won't break you in half....)

Your training program shouldn't just consist of endless burpees and sit-ups. Smart programming will help you get stronger, move better, look better and feel better. Quality programming will give you a chance to either challenge an exercise or have an alternative based on what your body needs or if you have an injury you are working with. Smart programming is key for long-term success because while you get stronger and more fit you should also work on improving your movement to prevent and avoid injury and feel your best!

Online training provides a flexible approach when it comes to fitness. If you find that hitting the gym just isn't a reality for your schedule and your lifestyle it can be the perfect way to do fitness on your schedule and timeline!
