Highlighting five podcasts and some essential listening to help us better understand the world around us.

Podcasts provide a fantastic way of telling a story. The phenomenal success of the podcast Serial is just the most recent example of the format's power. Both the wide variety of topics and the accessibility of the format have contributed to its success over the years, but it's also become a fun and easy way for passionate bloggers and others to have their voices heard by entirely new audiences.

Below we've compiled a few of our recent favourites that range from life and living tips to exploring the crossroads of technology and culture. Each is fantastic in its own right, and these podcasts are sure to make you a more informed millennial.

The Art of Simple Podcast, hosted by Tsh Oxenreider, author and founder of the blog by the same name, is (in its own words) about living with purpose and enjoying the ride. This prolific podcast has racked up nearly 80 episodes over the past four years covering topics from the power of journaling, homeschooling, and strategies for living well. The podcast was previously known as "The Simple Mom" so it's also heavy on parenting and family content. Perfect for millennials who are just stepping into parenting themselves.

Essential Listening: "Somebody Sewed That Shirt"

Have you ever wanted to know more about money, not just how to manage your personal finance but how the economies of the world work? Do you want to learn about arbitrage by way of selling textbooks, or why it's so difficult to raise money for Ebola? How about one of the most important questions in finance: What actually happens at the end of Trading Places? Planet Money won't just improve your financial IQ, it will show you how money permeates our lives.

Essential Listening: "Free Money"

Tech: Spark

Besides sports, this subject might be the most competitive podcast field out there. Enthusiasts can find anything from the highly technical to podcasts for close to any tech-niche. These podcasts are great for people looking to gain further insight into their particular fields but they often lose the big technology picture - how it shapes our daily lives. That's where Spark succeeds. The show seeks out and features the places where technology and society intersect. From stories about teaching prisoners to code to examining the future (and past) of music, Spark is one of the most accessible and important technology sources available.

Essential Listening: "Speech Donors"

Arts: Q

This one sounds like a controversial choice, but former host aside, Q has been the definitive show for arts and culture features and interviews with some of the biggest names in the arts since its debut in 2007. Like Spark, it's produced by the CBC but features guests and stories from around the world. Currently Q is being hosted by a range of guest hosts that have included Wab Kinew, Piya Chattopadhyay, and Tom Power. As the show continues its evolution, it's tracking its progress through the Q the Future blog, and even asking for audience feedback on who should be the next permanent host.

Compiled twice a day, Global News will turn you into a full-out news junkie. This is radio journalism at some of its best, with stories from all over the world. Spend just 30-minutes with the World Service and you'll begin to fell more connected with the rest of the world. The Global News Podcast covers the most important stories from around the world clearly, with accuracy and detail that will not only give you the facts, but will help you understand the context of the events.
