Ontario Swelters Amid Record-Setting Heat

CBC An early arrival of sweltering, summer-like heat and humidity broke records for major cities in southern Ontario on Wednesday.

"It has been the warmest June 8th on record for many cities across Ontario as millions from Chicago to Montreal bake in summer heat," said CBC meteorologist Michelle Leslie.

Toronto Pearson set a new record of 33.1 C, shattering the old record of 32.2 C set back on June 8th in 1950. Other cities that broke records were Ottawa, Windsor, Buttonville (Markham) and Burlington. The record heat temperatures are as of 2:15 ET and Leslie is expecting more heat records to be broken as the day wears on.

Humidex ratings for southern Ontario are expected to reach as high as 42 C for Windsor and 43 C for Ottawa. The UV index is expected to be eight in Toronto, which is rated as very high.

The city of Toronto issued a heat alert as did London and Hamilton. There were smog advisories issued for Windsor and surrounding areas in southwestern Ontario.

Leslie did say that a cold front travelling over the upper Great Lakes, expected to arrive overnight on Wednesday, will bring some relief for southern and eastern Ontario.

Temperatures will be about 10 C cooler and the front will also bring overnight thunderstorms to Northern and eastern Ontario.
