THE CANADIAN PRESS -- SMITHERS, B.C. - A search is underway in northern British Columbia for a pair of British newlyweds who set out on a backcountry adventure and failed to show up for their trip home from Vancouver a week ago.
RCMP Sgt. Rob Vermeulen (Vermew-Len) said Monday that the family of Ben and Caroline Davies hasn't heard from them since June 22, when they called from Smithers to say they'd be renting some kayaks and meeting up with someone they'd recently met in the area.
Vermeulen said the couple had borrowed a relative's pickup truck and were planning to head north towards Alaska to do some camping before going to Vancouver for their July 4 flight back to England.
"The family wasn't overly concerned because it seemed to be in their nature that if they're having a good time they may extend their stay," he said. "But when they hadn't heard from them by July 10th they reported them missing to police."
Ben Davies is 37 and his wife is 28, and Vermeulen said they are both experienced in the outdoors.
The couple was travelling in a 2008 black Mazda pickup truck with a white camper canopy, and police are asking for the public's help in finding them.
