THE CANADIAN PRESS -- TORONTO - Toronto police are investigating after 11 paintings, five of them by members of the Group of Seven, were stolen from an art store early this morning.
Police say they were called to the Canadian Fine Arts store near Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue East around 1 a.m.
Someone had allegedly broken in through the back of the Mount Pleasant Road store and made off with 11 paintings.
Five of the missing paintings are by Group of Seven artists, including works by A.Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, A.J. Casson, J.E.H. MacDonald and Frederick Varley.
Works by Canadian artists Fernand Leduc, Pierre Gauvreau and Jean Paul Lemieux are also among those lifted from the store.
Police are currently working to obtain surveillance footage of the incident.
