ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The leader of Newfoundland and Labrador's Opposition Liberal party is stepping down with only two months to go before a provincial election.
Yvonne Jones announced on Tuesday she can't lead the party's campaign for the Oct. 11 vote because her year-long fight with breast cancer has left her without enough energy to wage a province-wide campaign.
Jones says her cancer has not returned, but her immune system is weakened after bouts of radiation and chemotherapy.
She says she feels the disease has cheated her out of a dream she has wanted to fulfil her entire political career.
She says she intends to seek re-election in her Labrador district of Cartwright-L'Anse au Clair.
She was first elected to the provincial legislature in 1996.
The ruling Conservatives have 43 seats in the 48-seat legislature, the Liberals hold four and the NDP has one.
