MONTREAL - The Metro grocery chain is closing a meat-processing facility with 150 employees in Montreal.
Operations will cease over the coming days. A distribution facility in the same complex, where 320 people are employed, will continue operating.
Metro (TSX:MRU.A) spokeswoman Marie-Claude Bacon says the building was inaugurated in the late 1960s and would have required extensive, expensive renovations to keep it going.
The company says it examined several scenarios and finally decided that the cost did not justify keeping the Montreal North facility open.
Among the employees laid off today are several with decades' seniority.
