It's no surprise that Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square and City Hall became a focal point for those wanting to remember Jack Layton.
The NDP leader served as a long-time Toronto city councillor and both he and his wife lived in downtown Toronto.
Torontonians began leaving flowers, orange soda and chalk messages for Layton on Monday afternoon, hours after his death was made public. The tributes quickly covered part of the elevated walkway at the square and began to spill onto the concrete around it.
Wednesday's rain showers will likely wash away many of the chalk tributes but fortunately the striking impromptu memorial was caught in these photos.
People in Toronto will also have the chance to pay their respects, with Layton's casket lying-in-state at Toronto City Hall on Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Layton's state funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at Roy Thomson Hall.
