For kids and teens, one of the more exciting elements of back-to-school season -- apart from seeing their friends -- is the prospect of new clothes for that first day back.

Before opening up your parental wallets, there are a few tips for this season’s finds that shoppers to keep in mind. Victoria Kirk, a Gap Inc. spokesperson says parents should still be keeping an eye out for the classics.

“Tried-and-true classroom classics like hoodies, jeans and short- and long-sleeved tees are staples that form the foundation of a back to school wardrobe. Layering pieces also extend kids’ wardrobes throughout the year,” Kirk says.

Versatile pieces are also important for closets and this year as before, Kirk says all eyes are on denim.

“Jeans. They wear well, they’re durable, virtually seasonless and go with anything,” she says.

Shoppers should also keep in mind their own budgets and how much they want to spend each year.

“Invest in foundation pieces like denim and tees. Also, try shopping from themed collections and complimentary colour palettes so pieces easily mix and match throughout the year,” Kirk says.
