A cyclist is dead after being hit by a C-Train in northeast Calgary on Friday morning.
The accident happened at about 7:30 a.m. at 20th Avenue and 36th Street N.E., police said.
The area was cordoned off while police investigated the fatal accident.
Police Inspector Darren Cave said they seemed to have discovered the cause of the accident.
“We had a cyclist who was stopped at the northbound tracks and was observing the southbound train going by,” Cave said.
Brian Whitelaw of transit safety added that many similar incidents occur the same way.
“The common mistake that we have seen in many cases, not just recently, is that people do look one way and when that train goes by they step into the path of another train going in the opposite direction,” Whitelaw said.
It is the third fatal accident involving trains within the last 10 days.
On Sept. 4 a 74-year-old man died at 36th Street and 32nd Avenue N.E. after being struck by a C-Train.
And on Aug. 30 a 36-year-old man died after he was hit by a northbound train at 36th Street and 39th Avenue N.E.
