Unsuccessful Alberta Liberal leadership candidate won't seek re-election

EDMONTON - A longtime Alberta Liberal MLA who failed to win the party's leadership last month says he won't seek re-election.

Hugh MacDonald, who represents Edmonton-Gold Bar, says it's the right time to move on.

But he adds that losing to Raj Sherman wasn't the only factor in his decision to leave politics after 14 years.

MacDonald, who is 56, says the results suggest the party wants younger people to get involved.

MacDonald says he and Sherman talked about his decision last week and he has no animosity against the new leader.

MacDonald plans to help the Liberals retain his seat in the next election, but will go back to work in the oilpatch as a boiler-maker.
