TORONTO - Tailback Brandon Whitaker, who scored three touchdowns to lead the Montreal Alouettes past the Edmonton Eskimos on Friday night, was named the CFL's offensive player of the week.
Whitaker, the CFL's rushing leader with 906 yards, ran for 113 yards and a TD and added five catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns. With the win, Montreal moved to within two points of first-place Winnipeg in the East Division standings.
Winnipeg defensive back Jovon Johnson captured defensive player honours. Johnson had three tackles and two interceptions — returning one 27 yards for a touchdown — in the Bombers' 25-24 road loss to the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday night. Johnson, who has a league-best six interceptions, also returned four punts for 33 yards.
Marcus Thigpen of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats was named top special-teams player after returning a missed field goal try 118 yards for a touchdown in a 55-36 win over the Calgary Stampeders in Moncton, N.B., on Sunday. Thigpen also returned three punts for 17 yards and added six catches for 139 yards and two TDs.
Toronto defensive end Ricky Foley received the top Canadian award. The native of Courtice, Ont., had six tackles and two sacks to lead the Argos past Winnipeg.
