Born: Jan. 21, 1974.

Education: Studied at Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Que., where he earned a bachelor of arts degree with a major in political studies.

Early career: Worked as a special assistant to prime minister Jean Chretien. He also worked as manager of government affairs for the Bank of Nova Scotia.

Political career: Became leader of the Opposition Liberal party in April 2003 and elected to the legislature later that year in September, representing a riding in Charlottetown. On May 28, 2007, he led his Liberal party to a majority government in the provincial legislature.

Personal: His father Joe, who died in 1996, was premier of P.E.I. from 1986 to 1993. Robert Ghiz is married to Dr. Kate Ellis Ghiz and they have two daughters, Julia and Emma.
