TORONTO - One man is dead and five others have been taken to hospital after construction equipment collapsed at York University in Toronto.
Police and emergency officials say one of the injured was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated as a surgical team stood by in case amputation was needed.
EMS spokesman Peter Macintyre had little information about the patients but says at least one was taken by air ambulance to Sunnybrook Hospital.
Officials at the scene say the man who died is still buried in the debris. His name is not being released as his family is being notified.
TTC spokesman Brad Ross says the incident happened at the future site of the York University subway station, part of the Spadina line extension.
Ross said the men working at the construction site are subcontracted and that while it is a TTC site, the contractor has ultimate responsibility for its safety.
