CHARLOTTETOWN - A judicial recount in Prince Edward Island has confirmed that a Liberal candidate who won his riding in the provincial election by a thin margin is the victor.

The recount was held after incumbent Charlie McGeoghegan defeated Conservative candidate Darlene Compton in the Oct. 3 vote in Belfast-Murray River by eight ballots.

Elections P.E.I. says the recount held today in Charlottetown before the chief judge of the provincial court confirms that result.

The agency does not automatically perform recounts, but any candidate may apply for one.
