A Canadian aid worker in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was shot on Friday in an apparent targeted hit.
Francklin Guerrier was driving to work with family members and a close friend when a motorcycle approached his vehicle and one of the riders fired a gun directly at him.
The bullet passed through his body, but Guerrier escaped without life threatening injuries.
His friend, however, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was fatally wounded.
Guerrier works on a project financed by the Canadian International Development Agency in the Haitian capital. Late Friday night, Minister Bev Oda issued a statement expressing her sympathies.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the Guerrier family as they recover from this tragic incident. I am happy to hear M. Guerrier is in stable condition and I offer condolences to the family of his friend. Our Government is working with consular officials to ensure the family receives support," she said.
Guerrier, The Huffington Post, learned is under the careful watch of a guard at a hospital in Port-au-Prince and the Haitian National Police is investigating what happened.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said its consular officials are working closely with local authorities and to provide assistance but they couldn't comment further because of privacy consideration.
The Canadian government, HuffPost has learned, does not believe the attack against Guerrier was due to any affiliation with Canada or its development projects in the country.
