Toronto Teacher In Court On Child Porn Charges

A Toronto middle school teacher was in court Friday in connection with a child pornography investigation.

James Robert Coulter was charged with five offences relating to accessing and possessing child pornography after police searched his home near Yonge Street and Yonge Boulevard on Thursday.

The 41-year-old teaches a Grade 7/8 split at East York's Cosburn Middle School. He has been suspended with pay until further notice.

The school's principal, Troy Langevine, send out a letter to parents on Thursday, which notes that the charges do not involve any students at the school.

"While it is important to remember that laying criminal charges does not constitute guilt … we also cannot and do not take these allegations lightly," stated Langevine in his letter.

"Mr. Coulter was not at school today and will remain away, pending outcome of this matter," added Langevine. The school has arranged for a meeting with parents on Monday.

Coulter appeared briefly in court Friday before being remanded into custody.

His next appearance is scheduled for November 22.
