Blue Jays send reliever Brad Mills to Los Angeles Angels for catcher Jeff Mathis

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Toronto Blue Jays have traded left-handed reliever Brad Mills to the Los Angeles Angels for catcher Jeff Mathis.

The Blue Jays made the deal on Saturday to add the defensive specialist Mathis, who led the Angels with 79 starts behind the plate last season.

Mills made four starts for the Blue Jays last season, going 1-2 with a 9.82 earned-run average. He spent most of the season at triple-A Las Vegas, going 11-9 in 24 starts.

Although Mathis is a strong defensive catcher, he batted just .174 with three homers and 22 RBIs in 2011. He is batting .194 with 26 homers since starting his major league career in 2007.

Toronto lost Jose Molina to free agency on Nov. 28 when the veteran catcher signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. Molina is known for his defensive prowess behind the plate and ability to pick off runners stealing second base.

The Angels acquired catcher Chris Iannetta from Colorado last Wednesday.
