Liberal says trust fund should be set up for town after fish plant closure

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - An Opposition critic in Newfoundland is calling on the government to set up an insurance trust fund for the town of Port Union.

Fisheries critic Jim Bennett's request follows a decision last week by Ocean Choice International to close the town's seafood processing plant, throwing 170 people out of work.

Bennett says an environmental assessment should be carried out, and the company should be required to pay any cleanup costs.

The plant has been closed since September 2010 when hurricane Igor damaged the building.

Ocean Choice has also closed its plant in Marystown, leaving another 240 without work.
