By definition, trends are fleeting. They're ephemeral. And every day we see our fair share of looks we'd like to remove from our sartorial lexicon. So join us, each week, as we analyze a trend that's had its 15 minutes of fame. These looks are well into their Minute 16, folks. It's time to usher them toward stage left.
The Trend: There was a time when walking around with dark roots was unacceptable -- if you wanted to be considered fashionable, you had to rush out to your stylist for a touch-up. In 2009, however, half-and-half hair was deemed a trend (thank you, Proenza Schouler). It was even given a name: ombre. Dark, bold roots stood out starkly against the light, sometimes bleached (bleached!) ends on heads everywhere.
Chief Offenders: This style has practically been seen on everyone. It walked out of the street style blogs and onto the pages of our favourite gossip magazines -- we blame the heads of Drew Barrymore, Hilary Duff, Jessica Biel and Lindsay Lohan. Drew, pictured above, comes in at number one on our ombre lover's list.
What's Wrong With It: It's supposed to look effortless and casual. But it also looks lazy. Your friends may ask, "Oh did you forget to schedule your hair appointment this month?" Your response: "No, I paid to have my roots look grown out." Yeah, it's an awkward conversation. You paid to have your hair look lazy. Really?
May We Suggest: The look can work, as long as the ends don't contrast the roots too much. You don't want it to look like you dipped your ends in a can of bleach by accident (it isn't very face-flattering). So try a slight ombre fade throughout your hair. And, like always, using a professional hairstylist is the best way to achieve this look -- he or she will be able to tell you if it's going to look good with your bone structure and can make sure the whole experiment doesn't turn into a disaster.
