Forget the "merry Christmas" vs. "happy holidays" debacle -- now that Hanukkah is officially starting, the new issue is how to transliterate the Hebrew word into an English one.
The various options -- which include Hanukkah, Chanukah, Hanaka and many more -- have different origins, but the simplest explanation remains this: the "Ch" spelling is meant to emulate the throat-rumbling "ha" sound that begins the word in Hebrew, while the "H" spelling is geared toward English speakers who will inevitably interpret the Ch as a "cha" sound. Now, working at a news organization, we get an easy out when it comes to matters such as this -- the official HuffPost stance is Hanukkah, as you can see -- but it's not that simple for the rest of the world.
