Investigation Into 2 Deaths At Alberta Prison Underway

Two inmates at a Drumheller prison died Saturday both after being found unresponsive in their cells.

Both were pronounced dead after being rushed to a nearby hospital in Drumheller, Alta.

During cell checks Saturday, inmate Nicholas Whynott was found to be unresponsive in his cell and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

As RCMP members were investigating the death of Whynott, correctional officers responded to a second inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell. Derek Upton was taken to Drumheller Hospital by EMS and later pronounced dead.

The investigation into the two deaths is still ongoing. An autopsy has been scheduled for early next week for both inmates.
