Callander firefighter, 21, dies in highway rollover

The name of a volunteer firefighter who died in a fire truck crash Tuesday, west of Powassan, has been released.

Ontario Provincial police said 21-year-old Paul Nelson of Callander died after the fire truck he was driving rolled over and trapped him in a ditch of Highway 534.

The volunteer firefighter, a member of the Nipissing Township Fire Department, was on his way to a call Tuesday morning when his vehicle veered off Highway 534 and went into the ditch.

Police said the highway conditions at the time of the collision were icy and had snowy and slushy sections.

Nelson was the only person in the truck, and no other cars were involved, OPP said.

Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the crash.
