Slain Oakville woman, man shot by police were estranged couple

The woman who was found stabbed to death inside her Oakville home is the estranged spouse of a man who was shot dead by police.

Katherine Newman, 43, was found dead in her home on Treetop Terrace just before noon on Thursday.

Police became aware of her death just minutes after officers fatally shot an Oakville man at a police station located a few kilometers away.

The man was found causing damage in the parking lot of a police station at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Thursday.

When officers went to confront him, they had “an interaction” with the man before he was fatally shot, according to the province’s Special Investigations Unit.

The SIU has identified the man as 43-year-old Kyle Newman of Oakville.

Halton regional police confirmed on Friday afternoon that Kyle Newman and Katherine Newman were married, but the couple had become estranged and lived in separate residences.

Media reports said the couple had three children.

As of Friday, the SIU was still probing the circumstances of Kyle Newman’s death, while Halton police remained at the Treetop Terrace home where Katherine Newman was found dead.

The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
