Mayor of Canso, N.S., disappointed at town's merger with Guysborough

CANSO, N.S. - The mayor of Canso says he's disappointed that a provincial regulator has chosen to dissolve the Nova Scotia town and merge it with a surrounding municipality.

Frank Fraser says he would have preferred if the Utility and Review Board had allowed the town to become a village and keep its independence.

The board ruled Thursday that the town on the eastern tip of mainland Nova Scotia would amalgamate with the municipality of Guysborough on July 1.

But Coun. Fin Armsworthy disagrees with the mayor, saying there wasn't much opposition expressed to the amalgamation.

Fraser says he thinks the town would have had more control over its services had it kept its autonomy.

Canso was once a bustling fishing port but fell on hard times with the decline of groundfish stocks and the closure of a local fish plant.
