Shafia Trial Verdict: Twitter Reactions On The Impact Of The Guilty Verdict

'Be A Real Mother And Confess': Twitter Reactions To Shafia Trial Verdict
CP/Handouts

After three months in court, the guilty verdict on the Shafia murder trial was handed down quickly, and the reaction on Twitter was just as swift.

A jury took just 15 hours to find Mohammad Shafia, 58, his wife Tooba Yahya, 42, and their son Hamed, 21, each guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in the killings of Shafia's first wife and three daughters. Rona Amir Mohammad, 52, Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, were all found drowned and submerged in a vehicle in a Kingston, Ontario, canal in June 2009.

From the start of the trial, Canadians tweeted their views on the trial, the deaths of the four women, and the notion that these could have been 'honour killings' -- murders perpetrated on victims because of a perceived dishonour done to the family or community. The trial revealed details of a disturbing plan for murder orchestrated and executed by Shafia, Yahya and son Hamed -- a plan for which they will each now spend a minimum 25 years in prison.

For some, the guilty verdict proves that Canada's justice system will not tolerate so-called honour killings. Others warn that the Shafia case is just one example of the violence perpetuated in a widespread way against women on a daily basis. There is much more work to be done all over the world -- some on Twitter say the place to start is to put an end to the very term 'honour' killing.

Here are some of the early reactions on Twitter following the trial verdict. Let us know what you think - send a tweet to @HuffPostCaLiv or tell us in the comments below.
