Just as Conservatives prepare to welcome seven new senators to their caucus, The Huffington Post Canada has learned that one of their own is preparing to say goodbye.
Conservative Senator Michael Meighen will bid adieu to the upper house on February 6.
The longtime Conservative senator will make the formal announcement in the Senate on Thursday.
Meighen, the grandson of the Prime Minister Arthur Meighen, was appointed to the upper chamber in 1990 on the advice of his friend, former Progressive Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney.
A well respected commercial lawyer and philanthropist, Meighen ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons twice in the mid-1970s. He is currently the chair of the Banking, Trade and Commerce committee.
His office said the 72 year old's health is good, but that he just feels it is time to move on and concentrate on other projects.
"He feels he's accomplished what he wanted to do in the Senate and now is the time to focus on other things," his assistant said.
