Austria's Marlies Schild wins World Cup slalom after Lindsey Vonn falls in first run

SOLDEU-GRANDVALIRA, Andorra - Marlies Schild of Austria won her sixth World Cup slalom of the season on Saturday after overall leader Lindsey Vonn and defending champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch crashed out in the opening run on the Pyrenees course.

After finishing the first run in fifth place, Schild blazed through the 59 gates in a strong second run to clock a best time of 1 minute, 39.44 seconds, putting her one victory shy of the 34 slalom wins held by Swiss great Vreni Schneider.

Frida Hansdotter of Sweden came in 0.60 seconds behind, while Kathrin Zettel of Austria was 0.86 seconds off the pace in third.

Tanja Poutiainen of Finland led after the opening run but missed a gate with gusts blowing up the 200-meter (656-feet) Avet course.
