Say what you will about Yvon Gingras, he's not a man who does anything half-way.

The St. Ubalde, Quebec, resident was sentenced on Tuesday to six years in prison for his 24th drunk driving conviction, in what is believed to be an all-time Canadian record.

But Gingras' numerical achievements don't end there. According to La Presse, the 67-year-old man has drunk driving convictions going back 47 years, as well as six convictions for driving while under a ban, four convictions for refusing to submit to a breathalyzer, and 30 convictions for theft and assault.

In all, he has racked up 58 charges in 47 separate cases.

Gingras had been under a driving ban until 2021 when he got behind the wheel of a car last June. A member of a vigilante committee set up to monitor Gingras' behaviour contacted police, and Gingras was found with eight open bottles in the car.

"No sentence could dissuade [Gingras] from re-offending and he has learned nothing from his convictions," Judge Alain Morand said, adding Gingras' behaviour "represents a serious risk to public safety. In fact, he has no respect for the safety of citizens, nor laws, nor the courts."

Gingras has 64 months to go on his sentence, having received credit for serving eight months in pre-trial custody.
