"Sometimes the drama is in the clothes, sometimes it's in the makeup. This time it's super-both," said Smashbox Global Pro Lead Artist Lori Taylor, who keyed the Fall/Winter 2012 runway makeup for Lucian Matis at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel Monday evening.

Inspired by textures and colours and details of nature—"Nature's Art in Symmetry" Matis called it—the collection was dark and rich in details such as lace and gleaming feathers.
The focus was on the "neat, thick, saturated black eye." Taylor used Caviar Cream Liner as a base, then patted black shadow from the Smashbox Smokebox Eye Palette over the lid to the crease and into the inner corner of the eyes, then shaped and diffused the edges with a small, dense, rounded-bristle brush.
"The [eye-makeup] shape is more lifted and round than cat-eye," she explained. Onyx pencil intensified the upper lashline and the lower waterline; fluttery false lashes added a lush touch.
To up the drama of the eye makeup even more, Taylor also knocked back the brows using a tip gleaned from Pat McGrath via a makeup-artist friend: liquid concealer in the model's skintone, lightly stroked over the top of the brow hair. She finished the look by contouring the cheeks and a matte nude lip.

A team of team of Schwarzkopf Professional artists combined several trends to create the hairstyles: sleek sides, braids, ponytails, and texture. Key to the look was Osis Aqua Slide Texture, a light pomade, to keep the small, corn-row-esque braids controlled.
Manicures by Tips Nail Bar & Spa wowed with three different looks: black lace over neon yellow, matte black croc over neon yellow, and iridescent blue-black, feather-tipped nails.
