A young man is dead after falling into Lake Ontario in downtown Toronto early Friday morning.

It happened at about 3:45 a.m. at the foot of Yonge Street, just west of the Toronto Island ferry docks.

Dozens of police and firefighters responded, using bright lights to search for the man. The 20-year-old was pulled from the lake by members of the Toronto Police Marine Unit, without vital signs, and was pronounced dead in hospital.

The man and a friend who called for help had been riding Bixi rental bikes in the area of York Street and Queen's Quay when the man fell off the boardwalk and into the water.

"The victim had bent down to put his hands into the water and at that point fell into the water," Toronto police Const. Wendy Drummond said.

There are guard rails and life preservers in the area, as well as ladders leading out of the water. The area is not lighted, however.

Police say they are treating the death as suspicious and homicide investigators are involved. A post mortem is scheduled for Saturday. It will look at whether alcohol was a factor.

Police have not released any names and are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
