Three photographers from across Canada have made the shortlist for the 2012 Scotiabank Photography Award.
The finalists, Toronto's Arnaud Maggs, Vancouver-based Fred Herzog and Alain Paiement of Montreal, were chosen from 12 names submitted by a panel of artists, experts, curators and critics.
Paiement, with a passion for architecture and geography, is the youngest of the group at 42. Herzog, 82, is originally from Germany and known for his still life photography on Canada's west coast. Maggs, 86, is a Montreal native who started his career with commercial and fashion work.
Only in its second year, the awards recognize the best in Canadian contemporary photography. The winner will receive a $50,000 prize, a book of their work published by Steidl and a curated exhibition at the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival in Toronto. Last year's winner was Montreal photographer Lynne Cohen.
The award was developed by renowned Toronto photographer Ed Burtynsky, know for his large-scale work around the oil industry and manufacturing.
The winner will be announced on May 9.
