11 dogs die after house undergoing renovations catches fire in St. John's, N.L.

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Police in Newfoundland say a house that caught fire earlier this week in St. John's killed 11 dogs.

Const. Talia Murphy of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says investigators believe the blaze was caused by some sort of electrical problem, though she didn't elaborate.

Murphy says two dogs remain unaccounted for.

The fire erupted Tuesday morning in the neighbourhood of Kilbride.

The city's fire department has said the home was undergoing renovations and no one was inside at the time of the fire.

Murphy says she didn't know why there were so many dogs inside the house.

Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version incorrectly said that police reported 13 dogs died in the fire.
