University professor to make bid to become Fredericton mayor

FREDERICTON - A professor at St. Thomas University has thrown his name into the race to become Fredericton's next mayor.

Matthew Hayes says in a news release today that he's entering the election because he believes the city can create more environmentally sustainable neighbourhoods.

The election is scheduled for May 14.

Hayes says he grew up in Dalhousie, N.B., but says his roots in Fredericton run deep, with both his parents being from the city.

The sociologist is planning his official campaign launch at the Cedar Tree Cafe in the capital next Friday.
