Saskatchewan hoping federal budget doesn't make cuts at expense of provinces

REGINA - The Saskatchewan government says it knows the federal government wants to get its fiscal house in order.

But Employment Minister Rob Norris says Saskatchewan hopes that Ottawa's plan isn't carried out on the backs of the provinces.

The federal government will table its budget today and it's expected to centre on spending cutbacks.

Norris says Saskatchewan doesn't want to see any surprises or off-loading onto provinces.

Opposition NDP Leader John Nilson says he's concerned that costs could be off-loaded onto provinces and he wants Premier Brad Wall to stand up to Ottawa if that's the case.

Nilson says it would also be a shame if Ottawa doesn't address the education gap between First Nations children and kids in provincial systems.
