Cinnamon And Sugar ‘Fries': New Snack Made With Pie Pastry

Cinnamon and sugar go hand in hand and here it is used to complement tantalizing pastry "fries." These would be a perfect snack for home movie night or a kids’ sleep-over.

Cinnamon and Sugar Fries

For added flavour, serve with your favourite fruit jelly or fruit puree.

1 frozen deep-dish pie shell

5 ml (1 tsp) cinnamon

10 ml (2 tsp) sugar

10 ml (2 tsp) butter, melted

Heat oven to 200 C (400 F).

Remove pie shell from freezer and let thaw at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes.

In a small bowl, combine cinnamon and sugar; set aside.

Remove pie shell from foil onto a clean, flat, lightly floured work surface. If cracks appear in pastry, press together and repair using fingers moistened with water.

Cut out strips, about 1 by 7.5 cm (1/2 by 3 inches), using a fluted pastry cutter, and gently place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. (If dough gets too warm while preparing, refrigerate “fries” for at least 15 minutes before baking.)

Brush pastry with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon mixture.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until pastry is golden.

Makes 4 servings.
