MONTREAL - Firefighters have recovered the body of a construction worker after he and a co-worker were buried in a trench while doing excavation work in a Montreal suburb.
Emergency services spokesman Stephane Smith says the man was pronounced dead after being buried under three metres of earth for about five hours.
The other man, who is 43 years old, suffered two broken legs and was taken to hospital, but he was alert and talking to his rescuers when he was removed from the trench.
Wood panels had to be installed around the site to protect firefighters who were involved in the rescue attempt.
The accident happened Montreal's Lachine borough.
