Nunavut renews RCMP policing contract for next two decades

OTTAWA - Ottawa and the government of Nunavut have reached an agreement to renew the territory's contract with the RCMP for another 20 years.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews says it's a significant milestone.

Nunavut Justice Minister Daniel Shewchuk says the new agreement builds a new relationship with the RCMP based on effective management and efficiency.

He says it will serve to strengthen an already-close association.

Leona Aglukkaq, regional minister for the north, says the deal will give the Nunavut government increased input into issues affecting cost, quality and standards of police service.
