TOFINO, B.C. - A fisherman who had clung to his overturned boat for almost 12 hours was saved in a dramatic midnight rescue off the west coast of Vancouver Island late Wednesday.
The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria says the man disappeared Wednesday afternoon after heading out in his boat from the community of Kyuquot, north of Tofino, to set some fishing lines.
A Coast Guard vessel, a Buffalo aircraft and Cormorant helicopter were sent out to help other boats looking for the man.
The Buffalo dropped some flares about 12:45 a.m., which helped a search vessel find the man, who was clinging to the boat's overturned hull.
The search centre says the boat had flipped over for unknown reasons about 12 hours earlier.
The man was suffering from hypothermia and was taken to a nursing station at Kyuquot.
