Couple says well-stocked cabin was 'beautiful prison' before they were found

FORT MACLEOD, Alta. - A husband and wife stuck in the woods outside Fernie, B.C., for three days say they were lucky to find a well-stocked cabin while they waited to be found.

Jake and Anja Oosterwijk (OOO'-ster-wick) were rescued Tuesday and have been reunited with their seven children in Fort Macleod.

Jake Oosterwijk says they took wrong turns on some back roads and got stuck in the snow.

"It's unbelievable, you're in a beautiful prison," he said.

"We found a cabin and broke in and found a wood stove, found macaroni and we had water enough and salt and pepper and sugar and after eating and warming up and sleeping a little bit, we planned to go back (to the vehicle) for a couple of hours and to leave a sign of life."

He says the couple is thankful to everyone in Alberta and British Columbia who searched for them.

"To realize the pain for my family and for my friends, that was very, very bad and very difficult and made us very desperate" to be found, he said.
