Nova Scotia increases guide dog allowance for people on social assistance

HALIFAX - People on social assistance in Nova Scotia who rely on a guide dog will receive more money to help care for the animals.

The province's Community Services Department says the monthly guide dog allowance will go up to $90 from $60 as of May 1.

About 15 people receive the allowance, which will include an additional $300 per year to cover routine veterinary exams and care.

The department says it decided an increase was necessary after consulting with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
