Black Tickle, Labrador, Reeling From Shutdown Of Crab Plant

BLACK TICKLE, N.L. - The residents of Black Tickle in Labrador are worried about the future of their remote community now that its only employer is shutting down.

Labrador Sea Products confirmed Wednesday it will not be reopening its crab plant this year.

Mayor Wendy Quinlan said it looks like the plant may never open again.

The closure will affect just about every person in the coastal community, she said.

Quinlan said that if the company knew it wouldn't be opening again, it should have told the town last fall when people had an opportunity to leave to find work.

The coastal boat service doesn't resume until June, and the sea ice is too poor to cross on snowmobile.
