BC Ferries cancelled a number of sailings of the Queen of New Westminster on the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay route as the long weekend got underway Friday due to mechanical issues, including a hoped-for return to service at 4 p.m. PT.
Consequently, it also means the 6 p.m. sailing of the vessel back from Swartz Bay also has had to be cancelled.
BC Ferries said it has added extra sailings, including an 8 p.m. run from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen and a 10 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay on the Coastal Renaissance "to assist with heavy traffic."
Shortly before noon, divers and engineers managed to finish repairs on the vessel's broken rudder and it set out on a sea trial to ensure it was fit to resume service.
But trouble with the engine cooling system has continued.
BC Ferries says it would refund the reservation fees for anyone with a booking on the cancelled sailings, but they will not give them priority boarding on any other sailings.
