Blue Bombers practice attracts thousands of fans

Thousands of Winnipeg Blue Bombers fans gathered at Canad Inns Stadium to watch their CFL team's first open practice of the season.

About 7,500 fans filled the stands on Sunday morning, as nearly 80 players — including those who participated in last week's rookie camp — took to the field.

"It's a community team, right? And here's your community supporting you," said Jacquie Rasmussen, a season-ticket holder who watched the practice with her son.

"The Jets, you know, are done for the year, so now it's our Bombers' turn."

Fans who came out on Sunday did not seem upset with construction delays at Investors Group Field, which will be the Bombers' new home when it opens.

Team officials had hoped the new stadium would be ready in time for the July 26 home opener, but they say it's now slated to open by Sept. 21.

Fans who missed Sunday's practice can still see the team in action this week, as more open practices are scheduled from Monday to Friday in the mornings.
