The health of the Toronto Blue Jays’ starting rotation quickly took on greater importance than the team’s attempt at avoiding a three-game sweep at the hands of visiting Washington.
Right-hander Kyle Drabek exited Wednesday’s afternoon contest with an undisclosed injury after appearing to get his spike caught in the dirt on the pitching mound at Rogers Centre.
Drabek left with one out in the fifth inning trailing 4-2 after allowing seven hits and four runs, and was replaced by left-hander Aaron Laffey.
On Monday, fellow Jays righty Brandon Morrow left his start with a strained oblique (rib cage) muscle and two days later was put on the 15-day disabled list.
Versatile infielder Yan Gomes, who was sent to AAA prior to Morrow’s injury, has been recalled from Las Vegas.
