Opponents of budget bill protest outside office of fisheries minister

FREDERICTON - Opponents of the federal government's omnibus budget implementation bill held a small demonstration outside the Fredericton office of Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield today.

David Coon of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick says Bill C-38 tears apart the country's system of environmental protection.

Sheena Young of the Fundy North Fishermen's Association says fisheries groups were not consulted, and is worried changes to the employment insurance program will force young fishermen to leave for the oilfields of Alberta.

David Shaw of the Public Service Alliance of Canada says thousands of his members are worried they will lose their jobs.

Shaw delivered a letter to Ashfield's office, saying his members will express their opinion when they go to the polls in the next federal election.

Ashfield was in Ottawa, where members of Parliament are voting on hundreds of amendments to the bill.

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says the legislation is necessary and will strengthen Canada's economy.
